I Was Ashamed… My Crew Was Lame

Sunbeam Mixmaster

You may remember Funkmaster Flex blessing the airwaves on Independence day with nothing but gems from the 90’s. Well, they did it again. This time Hot 97’s rookie Peter Rosenberg got his first chance at hosting a Mixmaster Weekend show. Though the July 4th one was crazy, this one was a bit more special for someone like me, especially since I didn’t even know half of the songs Flex played. It was definitely the music and the lifestyle that inspired, gave birth and shaped the hip hop that I was introduced to, so I had to respect it. Plus, it was nothing but hot songs.

This time around, Peter Rosenberg did a set for my generation… at least the hip hop heads of my generation (see: thread title). He was obviously told not to play his usual shit, but I think everyone was pleased with the line up. After introducing the new tracks of the week, he went from Pun, to Dre to Snoop back to Dre, then when the West Coast was well represented, he was able to get back to the NY rap scene. Even though he began with Mary J, he then held down the Bad Boy era with the Benjamins, then some L.O.X., from the Shiny Suits era, then some Mobb Deep, then some Nas & G Rap, some Black Moon & Brand Nubian, which was so necessary, then some Jeru and he ended it on some Biggie. I’m not saying this is a definite list of 90’s music but it is what I would play at any given time. Last time, Flex caught alotta flak for not playing enough West Coast, or any Biggie which was Troublesome for some stanleys… and also for overlooking one of the decade’s biggest albums, even though it dropped in ‘99, 2001 has definitely earned it’s spot when discussing the 90’s. It was one of the best ways to end that decade/era, in my opinion. Flex wouldn’t even play the Benjamins… which was one of the songs that completely changed the face of hip hop in that era. No amount of security

I’m a bit mad that they didn’t hold it down with the usual shit between 3 to 4, but they do that everyweek and this is a goodswitch. Last time I made the list it was mainly to help people who were just as curious as I was, now it’s just to remember some of the sickest songs, chill out and enjoy the last day of this Labor Day weekend, or in my case, last day of the summer. Shout out to eskay, Dallas & Rafi for still being the best at what they do, and to everybody else on the blogroll. Big thanks to Sour D. for helping me out with the tracks.
