WordPress Ain’t Playing Fair

ahotmess.wordpress.com A Hot Mess ahotmessblog.com

I just clicked my way to A Hot Mess only to be disappointed by the above. I spoke to the good folks over at the website and apparently it’s not because they have archived their site, so it must be the latter. They are on their way to getting the new joint up, so stay tuned and it should be up and running by Monday. Man… that is one of, if not, the most important websites on the internet/WordPress.

It stays up in the top few websites with that garbage CNN Politricker and that website for people with down syndrome, followed by a slew of CNN money blogs. It honestly deserves the most shine out of any of those websites because CNN is the work of the shaetan and well, seriously… I CAN HAS CHEEZBURGER? That website has the most fucking hits on WordPress… for posting pictures of cats with retarded captions with typos. What kind of world do we live in where a CNN political site (do you get the irony) and a pussy website runs the WordPress ranking every single day. Yo, that cat website gets mad advertisement from like cat food companies though, don’t think they really are retarded. But, I’m not trying to deface those blogs, they stay on their grizzly as much as anyone else, but honestly… how is it fair to just yank someone’s shit offline like that when they’ve worked so hard. You’ll never see that happen to a CNN blog because they’re in bed with WordPress, they get the exclusive rights for hosting the CNN blogs, and they wouldn’t dare do that to the other top website… who wants a couple thousand lonely angry menopausal feminists hunting them down in the Silicon Valley.

Regardless of all this, we need justice. Them crackas ain’t playin’ fair

Although many bloggers are unaware of it wordpress.com has been running Google adsense ads and contextual text ads on our free hosted blogs for over a year now.

“Why? To allow us to focus on free features in addition to paid and to offset costs of rapidly rising traffic.”

In addition VIP hosted bloggers are allowed to advertise on their wordpress.com blogs. http://wordpress.com/vip-hosting/ Just check out how much they pay for their blog set up and monthly fees and then take a deep breath.

But the times they are ‘a changing. This is what we find on the wordpress.com features page at the very bottom under the title Advertising.

“To support the service we may occasionally show Google text ads on your blog, however we do this very rarely. In the future you’ll be able to purchase an upgrade to either turn the ads off or show your own ads and make money from your blog.”

There has been a tremendous amount of discussion on the wordpress.com forums throughout the course of this last year as can be verified by the seachbox results . For the latest update take particular note of Toni and Matt’s quotes in this pertinent thread.

In that thread Matt has assured those who are concerned about how much money wordpress.com has been making from the advertising on their blogs that they will be given an idea of just how much to expect prior to the introduction of the upgrades.

“… when we launch the Ad Control upgrade it will tell you how much money we think you will make on your blog based on your traffic so you can decide whether you’d like to ‘go professional’ or not.”

It’s important to note that we cannot have blogger initiated advertising on our wordpress.com hosted blogs at this point in time.

It’s also important to note Section2, 5th bullet of the Terms of Service states that wordpress.com blogs cannot be used to drive traffic to third party sites.

Thanks for the post, Nation, the three of us really appreciate it.

The thing I want to say is that we were really surprised and disappointed with the way WordPress handled the situation. Like you mentioned, we are consistently in their top blogs and give them, on average, 25k hits a day. I know they have their “policies” but the way the FAQs and Support pages on the topic are worded are very condescending and just kind of down right mean.

But, regardless of how any of us feel about how WordPress handled the situation, ultimately it’s our fault for not having read the Terms of Service over more carefully, but come on, when you put “I Have Read the TOS” with a click box right next to the “OK” when someone is eager to start a blog, what do you expect?

All of the BS aside, I WILL say that we will continue to use the WordPress client, just on our own hosting, domain and, most of all, our own terms. The software is great, it’s just disappointing that the “.com” site is run the way it is. It was time for us to make this change anyway.

So, politics aside, if any of you reading are AHM! fans, we should be back and kicking come tomorrow. Add ahotmessblog.com to your bookmarks and tell your friends about our move, since we are locked out of our old account and can’t post the new link.

    Peace,
    J
