Def Not
- Young Jeezy feat. KanYe West - Put On [Full/Mastered]
^ I’ve been playing this song since Friday night, and I haven’t even heard the Jeezy verses yet.
- KanYe West - Lollipop Freestyle
^ Cons debut’d it on his kyte Channel, illRoots ripped it, and KanYe put it on Jonah Hill.
- Lil’ Wayne feat. Young Jeezy - Lollipop (RMX)
^ See explanation below. Also, I heard Young Jeezy’s been spitting FIRE on his last few featurings… but I really haven’t been paying attention.
Fabolous feat. Red Cafe - Fuck Em All
^ I originally heard this on an amazing Rick Ross blend with a Lil Wayne verse from an old Trina song, crack none the less.
Young Buck - N.Y. City
^ Doesn’t really fit the theme here and it’s kind of left-field, but this gets me in the zone. Even though it’s practically a carbon copy of We Roll.
- Oh, and I haven’t checked for a Jay verse in months.
Now watch as I’m about to break every Hip Hop rule there is in the book: I think the Vocoder (voicebox) might be the greatest thing mainstream hip hop has going for itself right now. I know it sounds like something ridiculous to say, but jokes aside, this is trueness. I used to hate T-Pain’s guts, but fuck if he can’t make an incredible song out of nothing. From his success, others have attempted to copy, usually successfully. Other notable uses of it were by Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Lil Kim, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne again, KanYe went in twice (above) & Lil Kim again. Sure, Lollipop was a big joke when it came out, but soon after I don’t know one person that wasn’t bumping it repeatedly, either for comedic or therapeutic purposes. All the above songs are hot as fuck too, with the exception of the Lil Kim attempts. Sit the fuck down Kimberly.
I feel like I’m crossing some sort of line here, the Mason-Dixie line of no return on hip hop blogs, but I acknowledge how fiery this song was and I gotta recognize game when it’s being spat.
Is there any redemption for me? Can I repent?

i got friends who hate the vocoder, i think it’s cool if it ain’t overdone and it’s in the proper context. the sensual seduction joint and the other track on the album (SD is out), i think they work. t-pain, i think he overdoes it

Well, nation no you are absolved of all hip-hop blog sin my man [||] (i like that). I actually wrote an email to one of the dudes at villagevoice about this and I actually am on board (so far) with the Peter Frampton, Roger & Zapp thing. BUT only certain people can do it well. Thus far I’m impressed with Wayne, 50, Yayo and, most of all, ‘Ye’s creative use of the Vocoder.
I think it is about to get very old though. Birdman, yes brrrr-what-happen-to-that-boy Birdman used it on a the Foolish remix and I was thoroughly upset. Hip-hop is looking to the past now, since the present is saturated with the likes of super-stupid rappers with record deals, so it’s no surprise.
The Vocoder is a mask that can do a few things. It makes wack lyrics sound crazy (see “Lollipop”), gives T-Pain the “voice” he needs to be a “rappa ternt sanga,” and most of all, it’s soooo entertaining. From that cock tease [||] of ‘Ye’s “Lollipop Freestyle” and his work on “Put On,” I’m convinced for the moment that to Vocoder makes any (or most) song(s) hot.
Ok, so after that ramble, it’s safe to say that I’m with you on this one.
P.S. If Jay-Z does it, I’m done.

I agree in the fact that the useage of the voicebox is going to be overdone. But then again it took a really long time “Califorina knows how to party???” Remember that one… In additon, in terms of the Hip-Hop rules what have you done wrong?? called someone wack, i thought being an asshole was one of the bigest parts of hip-hop, hahaha. anyway i agree with you this may be good for mainstream shit at least it has these fools doing something different. i mean hell inovation is great but copying of some old white guys can’t hurt for a while.

It is not a vocoder or a voicebox or a talkbox, its AutoTune. Cher had that same effect on “Believe” back in 98. Wanna hear the difference go listen to Zapp.
